What is Sub Ohm Vaping? What You Need to Know

Sub ohm vaping is a type of vaping that is known for its intense flavour and large vapour production. It is one of the most popular types of vaping today and a style that cloud chasers love.

Sub ohm vapes are characterized by the type of coils they use which have a resistance of 1 ohm or less. Sub ohm literally means below 1 ohm but the coils usually range anywhere from 0.15 Ohm – 0.3 Ohm.

To power these low resistance coils you’ll typically require a device that can operate at a high power level ranging from at least 40 W to 300W depending on the coil. This means you’ll often blow through your battery and juice slightly faster than MTL devices but in return, you’ll be rewarded with big fluffy clouds and intense flavour.

 Pros:

  • Big, fluffy clouds
  • Intense flavour
  • Warm vapours

Cons:

  • Not discrete
  • Juice & battery may run out quicker
  • Stronger hit

How Does Sub Ohm Vaping Work?

When sub ohm vaping, a lower resistance causes the coil to heat up faster and vaporize more e-juice. This helps to produce more flavour because of the intensity of the vaporization process. Then more airflow is required to cool down the higher heat produced from the coils resulting in bigger clouds.

When choosing your e-juice, remember that the higher the VG content the larger clouds you will produce. Browse Vapour Canada’s wide range of e-juice to make the most of your sub ohm vape. We always recommend utilizing our MAX VG blend when using sub-ohm tanks, as higher PG content can run the risk of causing leakage.

    DTL and Sub Ohm Vaping

When using a sub-ohm tank, the vapour is typically not taken into the mouth first. It is taken directly down to the lungs and then exhaled. This is unlike mouth to lung (MTL) tanks which mimic a cigarette draw.

Sometimes you will hear sub ohm vaping referred to as direct to lung (DTL) and this is where it comes from. The direct to lung impact can be heavy for new users so choose a low nicotine level if you are a beginner who wants to try sub ohm vaping.

    Sub Ohm Tanks

Sub ohm tanks are preconfigured tanks that are geared toward a high-powered, low resistance setup. They were designed to mimic the effects of RDA’s without the hassle of actually dipping yourself. Most sub ohm tanks can be simply inserted into your mod to start vaping in this style.

Most starter kits are MTL but there are some expectations. For example, the Geekvape Aegis Mini Kit with Obelisk Tank and Smok Nord 2 40W Kit can be configured for sub ohm vaping.

    Who is Sub Ohm Vaping?

Today, sub ohm tanks are more popular than the traditional MTL tanks. Most attribute this change to the stronger flavour and larger vapour production.

However, if you are making the change from smoking to vaping then an MTL vape tank might be the right choice for you since it mimics the draw of a cigarette. Sub ohm vaping can sometimes turn off new vapers.

Sub ohm vaping is not for everyone but those who like it tend to be big fans. To get started with sub ohm vaping, choose a high powered device that is compatible with low resistance coils.
